The Orpington Chickens are the breed of chicken family after Orpington, which is situated at England. Orpington become famous through out the world for the breeding of Orpington Chickens, which is belongs to one of the best class of English Chicken. The meat quality of this type of chicken is very good. These Birds are also large in size. Soft appearance with beautiful rich colors and gentle behavior increase their popularity as the show bird rather than utility breed. Due to large size and large weight Orpington Chickens are unable to fly thus the works well as backyard bird. Orpington Chickens can be surviving in both cold and hot weather but due to their natural build they feel more comfortable at cold weather rather than hot climate. The resistance power against diseases of this type of chicken is very high.

Araucana Chicken

In the year 1886, a poultry manager, Mr. William Cook first bred the original Black Orpington Birds by the crossing of Minorcas Chicken, Langshan chicken and Plymouth Rocks Chicken. From then this new hybrid bird brings an era in poultry business. The first Orpington bird, bred by Mr. William Cook was very much similar with Langshan bird and it was black in color. This bird makes a huge popularity in the market at its first appearance.

In 1889, Mr. William Cook again cross bred, in search of new variety of Orpington Bird and again a new Orpington bird was created, which was white in color. In the year 1894, Mr. William Cook brought Buff colored Orpington Chickens in the market and again in 1905 he introduced blue colored Orpington bird in the market.

Beside all the original colors i.e. black, blue, white, buff, many other varieties are available in the market today. Some of are, Porcelain Orpington Birds, Red Orpington Birds, Mottled Orpington Chickens, Speckled Orpington Birds etc. Porcelain Orpington Birds have also two varieties. They are Jubilee Porcelain Orpington Birds and Speckled Porcelain Orpington Birds. At the present day, almost 50% poultry business is occupies by Orpington Birds.

Chickens Hatching

In the mid of twentieth century, a German, Hermann Kuhn developed a new variety of Orpington Birds, which is known as Bantam Variety of Orpington Birds. The Bantam Variety of Orpington Birds is smaller in size rather than the original hybrid Orpington Birds. The Bantam Variety of Orpington Birds is available in large variety of colors i.e. white, black, blue laced, red, buff black laced birchen and Columbian.
